Dereck Rovaris
Vice Provost for Diversity at LSU
Dereck J. Rovaris, Sr., Ph.D., is an experienced higher education administrator who has dedicated his career to diversity, equity, and inclusion.13 He served as the inaugural Vice President for Equity and Strategic Initiatives at St. Mary’s College of Maryland since May 2022.1 However, he retired from this position effective May 31, 2024, after a 42-year career in higher education.3
Past Roles and Education::
- Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Louisiana State University (LSU) From 2014 to 2021, Rovaris served as a principal advisor to the president and provost on matters involving equity, diversity, and inclusion.1 During his time, LSU saw record numbers of underrepresented students in each of the entering freshmen classes and record numbers of graduates who were students of color, first-generation, and Pell-eligible students in each of the last six graduating classes.1
- Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic & Multicultural Affairs at LSU Health Sciences Center Prior to his role at LSU, Rovaris was the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Multicultural Affairs at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.1
- Xavier University of Louisiana Rovaris spent 25 years at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he directed several nationally recognized student programs.1 Some of his roles at Xavier included Special Assistant to Academic Affairs, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, and Director of Graduate Placement & McNair programs.1 He also worked as a Pell Grant Officer early in his career.1
- Education Rovaris earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Human Development, and Crime & Delinquency Studies from the University of Kansas.12 He also holds an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Xavier University of Louisiana and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.12

- Rovaris has been a board member at the University of Holy Cross since January 2019 and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation since 2016.1 He is also the past president of the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education.1 Additionally, he was a board member at Notre Dame Seminary from 2006 to 2017.1
- Rovaris has served as an educational consultant and speaker on diversity-related topics.12 He has a number of publications on graduate school placement and diversity and is the author of a book on Dr. Benjamin E. Mays.1
- He received the W.E.B. DuBois Award for higher education from the National Alliance for Black School Educators.1
