Ik geloof dat innovatie en interdisciplinaire samenwerking de sleutelaspecten te zijn om de gezondheidszorg in de toekomst betaalbaar en van goede kwaliteit te houden. Om dit duurzaam te bewerkstelligen moet deze interdisciplinaire samenwerking beginnen bij de toekomstige generatie professionals, oftewel studenten. Middels het Avicenna Excellentie programma wil ik hen laten kennismaken met interdisciplinaire educatie en hen de handvaten bieden om gezamenlijk innovatie in de zorg te bewerkstelligen.

Het Avicenna Excellence Program is een extracurriculair programma voor high potential masterstudenten. Centraal in het programma staat innoveren in de gezondheidszorg door interdisciplinaire samenwerking. In kleine teams werken deelnemers met verschillende achtergronden aan innovaties voor 6 thema’s binnen de gezondheidszorg. De studenten worden tijdens thema-avonden geïnspireerd en geïnformeerd door vooraanstaande sprekers over elk van deze thema’s. Daarnaast worden er masterclasses gegeven waarin essentiële ondernemings- en innovatievaardigheden worden bijgebracht. Tijdens het eindevent presenteren alle teams hun innovatie en strijden zij om de titel Avicenna best healthcare innovation 2018.

During my internship at Brain Center Rudolf Magnus UMCU I have performed a research study in Epilepsy surgery, under the leadership of prof. Braun, dr. Van Eijsden and drs. Rados. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether there is a difference in seizure outcome following iEEG and subsequent surgery between subdural grid electrodes and sEEG, to offer a basis on which a guideline for iEEG evaluation, including patient selection strategies for a specific iEEG approach for example, could be constructed. In order to achieve this, I have compared patient characteristics, details of resection, and postoperative outcome of intracranial registrations performed in centers that use subdural grid electrodes (UMC Utrecht, NHNN and GOSH in London) with those of a center that uses sEEG (Niguardia in Milan).

1. Invasive monitoring with subdural grid electrodes versus stereoelectroencephalography for drug-resistant epilepsy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.   Grade: 8.6
Establishing and elaborating a systematic review and meta-analysis initiated by a European consortium (e-pilepsy, www.e-pilepsy.eu), to compare two different techniques for invasive EEG (subdural grids and depth electrodes) in patients with refractory epilepsy. Publication in preparation.

2. Seizure outcome after invasive monitoring with subdural grid electrodes versus stereoelectroencephalography in patients with medically refractory epilepsy.   Grade: 8.7
Establishing and elaborating a multicenter retrospective patient cohort study (n = 850) in which the two different techniques for invasive EEG are compared with each other. Data was retrieved from four of the largest epilepsy surgical centers in Europe (UMC Utrecht, UCL London, Great Ormond Street London, Ospedale Niguarda Milan). Publication in preparation.

Research Intern

This is the largest 'One Health' student congress in the Netherlands. 'One Health' stands for the improvement of interdisciplinary collaboration between doctors, veterinarians, scientists, industry and other health professionals. I was mainly involved in designing the social media channels, the program booklet, the mobile app, the logo, posters, flyers, banners and goodie bags, and writing promotional pieces. In addition, I arranged a number of speakers for the conference.

Chairman of the workgroup Reproductive Health and AIDS of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) Utrecht. 
This working group is committed both nationally and internationally to improve reproductive health and knowledge about HIV / Aids, sexuality and women's rights. In my function I led the working group and the meetings, and I represented the working group to external parties and the general meetings of IFMSA Utrecht and IFMSA Netherlands.

National coordinator of International Women's Day on behalf of IFMSA Netherlands and organizer of the national fund raising campaign (a total of € 1,850.65 was raised). 
For this purpose I designed a (covered) naked calendar with medical students to create awareness for equal rights among men and women, and therefore I organized the lay-out, styles and photographing of the students, the design of the calendar, and the promotion and the sale of the calendar.

Human dendritic cell targeting and activation by DPV-001, an autophagosome-enriched cancer vaccine.   
A human-explant model was used to investigate how well an innovative autophagosome-based vaccine for lung cancer patients was taken up by dendritic cells in the human skin, by which dendritic cells the vaccine was taken up, what the effects of vaccine uptake was on the activation of the dendritic cells, and whether good T cell responses against tumor proteins were induced by the dendritic cells that had taken up the vaccine.
