    Isaac Buwembo

Equity Designer, Business Strategist, and Coach

Isaac Buwembo is the Director of Service Design at Year Up, a nonprofit organization focused on workforce development. In this role, he integrates his passions for human-centered design and racial equity, aiming to create systems that prioritize equity and close the Opportunity Divide for young adults. Since joining Year Up in 2018, he has been instrumental in leading diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the organization, including forming a Change Team dedicated to anti-racism efforts.1

Buwembo's background is diverse; he initially aimed for a career in medicine influenced by his family's medical background. However, after witnessing systemic issues during medical missions in Uganda, he shifted his focus towards understanding and improving complex systems. He holds an MBA in Design Strategy from the California College of the Arts, which blends business acumen with design thinking.12 Before Year Up, he founded a social enterprise called Civil Labs, which provided leadership development opportunities for Black and brown youth in Oakland, California.1

In his current position at Year Up, Buwembo works on innovative projects that enhance the organization's training programs and expand their reach to serve more young adults effectively. He emphasizes empathy and understanding the needs of those served as central to his design philosophy.12 As a father himself, he also advocates for workplace support for parents, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.1 Looking ahead, Buwembo aims to develop scalable models of equity design that can be shared with other organizations to further empower young adults across the country.1
