Basil Greber
Team Leader at The Institute of Cancer Research
Dr. Basil Greber is a structural biologist and team leader at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London. He leads the Structural Biology of DNA Repair Complexes group within the Division of Structural Biology at ICR.12
Dr. Greber's research focuses on the structural and molecular mechanisms of DNA repair and genome maintenance in human cells.2 He uses advanced techniques like cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study large macromolecular assemblies involved in these processes.3
Education and Career Path
Basil Greber obtained his BSc and MSc in Biology from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. During his master's thesis, he worked in Professor Nenad Ban's laboratory, where he determined the structure of the Oxa1 membrane protein insertase bound to a bacterial ribosome using cryo-EM.3
In summer 2020, Dr. Greber moved to the Institute of Cancer Research in London to become a team leader.5 He is currently an MRC Career Development Fellow at ICR.6
Research Interests
Dr. Greber's laboratory investigates:
- Nucleotide excision repair
- Challenges in cryo-EM
- Structure-based drug design
His work has included determining high-resolution structures of the CDK-activating kinase bound to various inhibitors, which has implications for cancer research and drug development.4
Recent Achievements
- Published multiple papers on the structure of the CDK-activating kinase, including one in PNAS in August 2020.4
- Established high-resolution/high-throughput cryo-EM workflows for structure-based drug design, published in Nature Communications in March 2024.4
- Determined the structure of the protein-binding domain of the SRP68/72 dimer, published in Nucleic Acids Research in February 2024.4
Dr. Greber's work combines structural biology with biochemistry and functional studies to gain insights into important biochemical interactions related to cancer development and potential new therapeutic strategies.1
