Diamond rings started as a form of brideprice, from a time when women were valued primarily for their fertility, and were treated as a commodity. The diamond ring was therefore collateral for a woman’s honor; one commodity for another.
As society changed, DeBeers made diamonds into a meme (“a diamond is forever”). Today diamond rings are more about social status, a symbol of how rich he is and/or how much he loves you.
Why not disaggregate these two functions: social status from asset value? Take the same budget, buy a very large cubic zirconia, and buy bitcoin (an asset which will actually appreciate) with the rest?
