Zak Astor

Pianist/Vocalist/Songwriter & BMI Artist/Composer

Zak Astor is a young and talented musician from Burbank, California. He grew up in Woodland Hills and is of Dominican descent. From an early age, he showed an incredible talent for music, particularly piano. At just three years old, he entered a Montessori pre-school and learned to read quickly. By the age of four, he began formal classical piano study under a Russian master and had his first recital at just five years old.

Astor was identified as Highly Gifted/Highly Talented by LAUSD at the age of six and began performing at public events by the age of eight. At nine years old, he started playing Salsa Piano while attending Plaza de la Raza and added Jazz Piano at 10 when he passed an audition for JazzAmerica, a program that provides Jazz Master classes to highly gifted high school musicians.

From 2003-2006, Astor attended Millikan Music Academy before transferring to Pacoima Middle School Performing Arts Magnet to join the LAUSD #1 middle school Jazz Band under the musical direction of George Caganilla. He received after-school Jazz Master classes provided by The Thelonious Monk Institute and private Jazz Piano lessons at The Thelonious Monk Institute while attending Pacoima Middle School.

By age 13, Astor was already performing in Salsa nightclubs and quickly moving up the ranks. From 2006-2010, he attended and graduated from Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a Jazz Piano and Classical Voice (Tenor) major. He won numerous awards, competitions, and scholarships during his time there.

Astor is considered a young Master of the Salsa Piano Style and is well-known for his amazing technical ability and explosive percussive style. He studied Private Vocal under Lisa Stidham and Private Jazz Piano under Joe Bagg and Private Salsa Piano under Oscar Hernandez. He also studied Recording Arts Technology at Citrus College.

Astor was a former Piano Player for Son Mayor at Son Mayor, considered the best Salsa band in Los Angeles, and who performs 10-15 shows a month. Additionally, he is a member of the First United Methodist Church Choir where he sings as 1st Tenor.
