Zach Clayton, EIT
Associate, RMI Carbon-Free Electricity
Zach Clayton is an Associate at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), where he has been part of the Urban Transformation team since July 2021. His work focuses on developing tools and resources aimed at enhancing sustainable urban planning initiatives. In spring 2023, he transitioned to the Carbon-Free Electricity team, where he is involved in electrifying various sectors, including transportation, buildings, and industry.13
Background and Experience
Zach has collaborated with heavy transportation and industrial companies primarily in the US Gulf Coast and Southern California. His efforts include promoting electrification, green hydrogen, and low-carbon fuel alternatives. He has quantified energy and carbon emissions savings from urban nature in areas such as stormwater management and building energy efficiency across six global cities. Additionally, he has worked with city officials in Los Angeles and Paris to identify emissions hotspots for targeted action.12
Education
Zach holds both a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. He is also certified as an Engineer-in-Training and has interned with the Smart Surfaces Coalition, focusing on green stormwater infrastructure in Baltimore.13
