    Vanessa Tsehaye

Horn of Africa campaigner at Amnesty International

Vanessa Tsehaye is an Eritrean human rights activist and the Horn of Africa Campaigner at Amnesty International.13 She is also the founder of One Day Seyoum, an organization dedicated to fighting against human rights abuses committed against the Eritrean community.2

Born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, Tsehaye's activism began when she learned about her uncle, Seyoum Tsehaye, an Eritrean journalist who was imprisoned in 2001 for demanding democracy in Eritrea.1 At the age of 16, she launched One Day Seyoum to advocate for her uncle and other prisoners of conscience.1

Tsehaye has been actively involved in raising awareness about the lack of freedom of press, censorship, unjust imprisonment, and general abuse of human rights in Eritrea.2 She has spoken at various forums, including the Oslo Freedom Forum and the College Freedom Forum, to share her work and experiences in the search for freedom for Eritrea.14

In her role as Horn of Africa Campaigner at Amnesty International, Tsehaye continues to advocate for human rights in the region.3 She has called out the misuse of postcolonial rhetoric to justify human rights abuses and has emphasized the importance of international solidarity in combating oppressive regimes.4

Tsehaye's work has gained recognition in the human rights community. She participated in the Human Rights Foundation's Freedom Fellowship, a one-year program providing expert mentorship in areas such as leadership, movement-building, organizing, fundraising, media, mental health, and digital security.1
