Background
Tom's journey as a foundation co-founder began when his daughter Emily was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia at the age of five. After Emily's cancer failed to respond to conventional treatments, Tom and his wife sought out an experimental therapy called CAR T-cell therapy.1 Emily became the first pediatric patient in the world to receive this treatment, which ultimately saved her life. She has now been cancer-free for over 10 years and is considered cured.1
