Tom Negrete
Director at The California Research Bureau
Tom Negrete is the Director of the California Research Bureau (CRB) at the California State Library, a position he has held since November 2021. In this role, he oversees a team of researchers and librarians who provide nonpartisan public policy research and analysis for state lawmakers and the Governor's Office. His work includes editing research reports to ensure they are clear, timely, and impactful for California's legislative needs.12
Negrete has an extensive background in journalism and editing. Before his current role, he served as the Assistant Director at the CRB from June 2016 to November 2021, where he framed and edited research requested by the governor and other state officials. His previous experience includes significant positions at The Sacramento Bee, where he was the Managing Editor and Director of Innovation, and at CALmatters, where he focused on multimedia storytelling related to California public policy.12
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University.2
