Thomas Fortner is a passionate and dynamic individual with a diverse background in music as a conductor, educator, and arts entrepreneur.
Currently serving as the Assistant Conductor and Youth Orchestra Music Director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra since 2017, Fortner is deeply committed to using music as a tool to build stronger communities.
In addition to his role at the South Dakota Symphony, Fortner is the Executive and Artistic Director of the Dakota Sky Foundation, promoting the unique role of music in elevating influential leaders and thinkers through music-and-ideas festivals.
Starting in the Fall of 2021, Fortner will begin a new chapter as the Director of Orchestras at Augustana University, further expanding his impact in music education.
Recognizing the importance of Creativity Education, Fortner founded the Creativity Club, a program within the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra to foster students' skills in music composition and innovative problem-solving approaches.
Fortner's dedication to contemporary music was evident when he was selected as a Conducting Fellow at the Cabrillo Festival for Contemporary Music in the Summer of 2021.
