Stuart Tangye
Head, Immunology Division; Principal Research Fellow at Garvan Institute of Medical Research
Professor Stuart Tangye is a distinguished immunologist and researcher based in Sydney, Australia. He is a Conjoint Professor at the Faculty of Medicine & Health, UNSW Sydney, and the Head of the Immunology and Immunodeficiency Lab at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. His work primarily focuses on human immunology, cellular immunology, and primary immunodeficiencies, with a particular interest in understanding how genetic defects in immune cells lead to various diseases. His lab studies B cells, T cells, and their roles in immune responses during infections and vaccinations.135
Professor Tangye completed his PhD in 1995 at the University of Technology Sydney, followed by postdoctoral training at DNAX Research Institute in California. He returned to Australia in 2000 to establish his independent research lab. Over his career, he has published over 255 peer-reviewed articles and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Gottschalk Medal from the Australian Academy of Sciences (2011) and the Presidential Award from the Clinical Immunology Society (2019). He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.34
His research has significantly advanced understanding of immune system disorders and cancer immunotherapy. For example, his recent work has shed light on how immune checkpoint inhibitors used in cancer therapy can impair antibody production, leading to increased susceptibility to infections. This research highlights the balance between enhancing anti-cancer immunity and preserving overall immune function.25 Outside of academia, Professor Tangye enjoys surfing, cycling, swimming, and spending time with his family.3
