    Alex Swarbrick

Principal Research Fellow & Laboratory Head, Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Alex Swarbrick is a Senior Principal Research Fellow and Director of the Cancer Ecosystems Program at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.2 He leads a multidisciplinary cancer research laboratory focused on identifying new biomarkers and therapeutic strategies in breast and prostate cancer and melanoma.1

Swarbrick is an international leader in applying single-cell and spatially-resolved 'omics' to cancer research.1 He graduated with a BSc (Hons I) in Molecular and Cellular Biology from UNSW in 1995 and obtained his PhD in 2003.1 After completing postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, he established the Tumour Progression Laboratory at Garvan in 2008.1

    Currently, Swarbrick holds several positions:

    • Professor at UNSW (since January 2021)2
    • NHMRC Senior Leadership Investigator (since January 2022)2
    • Director of the Cancer Ecosystems Program at Garvan Institute (since February 2022)2

His research investigates the molecular nature of cancer heterogeneity, focusing on metastatic breast and prostate cancer and childhood neuroblastoma.2 Swarbrick's lab applies advanced methods such as single-cell multi-omics and preclinical models to discover new mechanisms of neoplastic transformation, metastatic progression, and remodeling of the tumor microenvironment.2

Swarbrick has received several awards throughout his career, including the NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship in 2019 and the NSW Premier's Award for Outstanding Research Fellow in 2011.12
