AI integration isn’t a binary decision, it’s a spectrum. Here are 3 key levels:

At one end, you have bolt-on chatbots that sit quietly on the sidebar, waiting for users to prompt them. They look impressive in demos, but in reality, they’re like interns without context - always needing direction, rarely driving impact.

Then you have context-aware assistants. These models actually understand what’s happening in your app. They can suggest, guide, or automate small parts of a user’s workflow. That’s better — but still reactive.

The final level is what we call an integrated teammate, aka AI as a collaborator.

This is where AI doesn’t just answer questions - it participates. It reads the room, understands the state of the project, and contributes alongside the user. It becomes part of the workflow itself.

That’s the level we enable with @liveblocks.

Because in collaborative tools, the real advantage doesn’t come from a smarter chatbot. It comes from an AI that can co-create - one that helps teams move faster together.

We’ve been mapping these 3 levels with product teams recently - if you’d like to compare notes, DM me.
