Sophia Ainslie, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, is a dedicated artist and educator currently teaching as an Associate Teaching Professor at Northeastern University in Boston.
Sophia's educational journey led her to pursue her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University, under the patronage of Henny Kirshon and the Art History Department at Tufts. She further honed her skills at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
Her artistic endeavors focus on integrating x-rays, territorial mappings, and sketches of her surroundings to create a distinct collage-like space that delves into the interconnectedness of the body and the environment.
Through the intersection of observation and imagination in her work, Sophia explores the intricate relationship between inside and outside, incorporating mark making and flat painted color to convey a unique perspective.
Aside from her studio practice, Sophia has an extensive teaching background, having served as a Lecturer and Adjunct Faculty at Northeastern University, taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and worked as a Teaching Artist at the Johannesburg Art Foundation.
Currently, Sophia Ainslie's studio is located at the 6 Vernon Street Studios in Somerville, MA, where she continues to create thought-provoking pieces that blur the lines between art, body, and landscape.
