Excerpt from SVENGALI by Eve Nicol
“Exorcise it. Disinfect with sunlight.”
There are these ants in the jungle, right. Millions of them, scurrying around, living happy anty lives.
But there is a fungus in the forest too. The fungus needs to separate an ant from her sisters. It unleashes a network of roots. Possesses the ant. Infiltrates ant’s muscles, antennae, cute – minch minch - pinchers. Floods her with chemicals that whisper in her ear – head to the sun.
Little ant, pleased for a break from thinking about aphids, royal jelly and the hundred things demanding her attention – she only thinks sun.
This fungus moves her body up grass stalks, stems and trunk. Breaks through the canopy and all the tiny ants below. She is The Ant. Sun beaming on her.
The optimal conditions for the fungus to spore. Its fruiting body births through the skull of Little Ant. A divine release of pressure.
Up high. With perspective. The ant knows the danger - and pleasure – of an empty head.
Across the treetops, other ants, twisting and changing under spores of their own.
Look at them.
The clear sky is bruised with burst skulls and blossoms.
