Simon O'Byrne is an award-winning urban designer and planner, currently serving as the Senior Vice President of Stantec's global Community Development Business Line.
With an extensive background in city building and urban revitalization projects, Simon has led multidisciplinary design teams in delivering large and politically sensitive developments worldwide.
His expertise spans from urban redevelopment projects in Canada, like the Alberta Legislature Grounds and the Saskatoon City Centre Plan, to international initiatives such as creating resiliency in Hull, UK, and the Hunts Point Plan in Bronx, New York.
Simon's contributions to the field have been recognized through various accolades, including being named amongst the Power 30 by the Edmonton Journal and among the 50 Most Influential People in Alberta by Alberta Venture magazine.
He also served as the Allard Chair in Business for MacEwan University and has been honored in Avenue magazine's Top 40 Under 40 list.
Apart from his professional endeavors, Simon is deeply involved in volunteering and community leadership roles, including positions in organizations like the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and the Canadian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility.
Simon holds a Master's Degree in City/Urban, Community, and Regional Planning from the University of Manitoba, a Master of Science in Environment Planning from Pratt Institute, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with minors in Sociology and Human Geography from the University of Alberta.
He also studied Theatre Arts at MacEwan University, showcasing his diverse educational background.
Throughout his career, Simon has held various leadership roles at Stantec, including Vice President positions in Community Development Canada and as a Discipline Leader in Urban Planning.
His extensive volunteer work spans organizations such as the Habitat for Humanity National Leadership Council, Urban Land Institute, and the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, highlighting his commitment to community engagement.
