Sharmistha Banerjee is an industrial designer with a background in collaborative innovation and sustainable product design.
Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, while also pursuing a part-time Ph.D. at the same institute focusing on Design for Sustainability, particularly in the area of scale-appropriate agricultural equipment design.
Sharmistha completed her Bachelor's in Industrial Design from IIT Guwahati and her Master's in Integrated Product Design from Technische Universiteit Delft, Netherlands.
She is a co-founder of the Sustainability and Social Innovation Lab at IIT Guwahati, concentrating on creating sustainable systems for human consumption and production through innovative design solutions, with a particular emphasis on agriculture.
She is actively involved in the global sustainability network, Learning and Education Network in Sustainability (LeNS), which comprises over 150 universities worldwide.
At IIT Guwahati, Sharmistha teaches a variety of courses including System Design for Sustainability, Usability Engineering, Product Detailing, Interaction Design, Design Management, and more.
Moreover, she has developed a Massive Open Online Course (MooC) on System Design for Sustainability that attracted over 600 subscribers during the academic year 2018-19.
Throughout her career, Sharmistha has collaborated with various organizations and institutions in India, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands, including companies like Philips, Infosys, and VU Medical University Amsterdam, as well as educational institutes such as IIT Bombay and MIT Institute of Design Pune.
Her expertise spans a broad spectrum of areas including sustainable product-service development, user research techniques, and plastics and composites.
