Samir Maji
Assistant Professor at IIT Bombay
Samir Maji is a distinguished scientist and professor with extensive experience in protein research and neurodegenerative diseases. While he briefly worked as a Research Associate at ETH Zurich from January to December 20082, his career has since progressed significantly.
Currently, Dr. Samir K. Maji holds the position of Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.15 His academic background includes a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta, followed by a Ph.D. in Peptide Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science.1
Dr. Maji's research interests focus on:
- Mechanisms of protein misfolding and aggregation
- Amyloid formation in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
- p53 amyloids in cancer
- Functional amyloids for drug delivery and tissue engineering1
Throughout his career, Dr. Maji has held positions at prestigious institutions, including:
- Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA
- University of California, Los Angeles, USA
- The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, USA (2006-2008)
- ETH Zurich, Switzerland (2008)12
His work has garnered significant recognition in the scientific community. He has been cited over 10,000 times according to Google Scholar3, and has received numerous awards, including:
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2021)
- Fellow of the National Academy of Science, India (2020)
- IIT Bombay Excellence in Teaching Award (2020)
- Tata Innovation Fellowship (2020)
- NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee Award (2019)1
Dr. Maji's research has led to important discoveries, such as the finding that protein/peptide hormones can be stored as amyloid-like structures in pituitary secretory granules.4 His work continues to contribute significantly to our understanding of protein aggregation and its role in various diseases.
