Salil Garg
Assistant Professor at Yale University School of Medicine
Salil Garg is an Assistant Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, specifically in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. His research focuses on understanding the processes that generate cellular heterogeneity in development and cancer, utilizing tools from RNA biology, genomics, machine learning, and data science.
Education and Training
Dr. Garg completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Chicago, followed by an MD-PhD in immunology through the Harvard-MIT combined program. His doctoral research involved using small regulatory RNA molecules to investigate cellular interactions within the immune system. He then underwent clinical training in laboratory medicine and molecular genetic pathology, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Phillip Sharp at MIT. His lab moved to Yale in the fall of 2022, where he continues to explore how non-genetic changes in cell populations affect behavior and can be leveraged for novel cancer diagnostics.234
Research Interests
The Garg lab investigates how small RNAs and other gene regulatory mechanisms contribute to non-genetic differences among cells. This research is particularly relevant in the context of cancer, where understanding these variations can inform better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Dr. Garg's work has been recognized in various publications, contributing significantly to the fields of immunology and cancer research.125
Professional Affiliations
In addition to his primary role in Laboratory Medicine, Dr. Garg holds secondary appointments in Pathology and is involved with several interdisciplinary programs at Yale, including the Center for RNA Science and Medicine and the Yale Cancer Center. His lab is currently recruiting trainees and staff at various academic levels.345
