    Rolf Aalto

Associate Professor at the University of Exeter

Professor Rolf Aalto is a distinguished Geologist and Physical Geographer with a keen focus on researching river dynamics, landscape formations, and sediment movement across various continents.

His expertise ranges from investigating river morphodynamics, soil erosion, sediment and carbon fluxes at different scales, from small creeks to vast river systems like the Amazon and Andes.

In addition to active research and fieldwork, Rolf is deeply involved in teaching and has significantly contributed to the Exeter GIS program, providing students with high-quality education in Geographic Information Systems.

He has co-developed the Exeter Radiometry Lab, a cutting-edge facility for sediment dating and tracing using various methods like fallout 210-Pb, 10-Be, 14-C, 7-Be, and OSL dating.

Rolf has pioneered new techniques for environmental record documentation, geophysical surveys, and sonar profiling to explore sediment layers beneath riverbeds and lakes.

Utilizing Remote Sensing technologies, GIS analysis, and flow modeling, Rolf tackles complex river system challenges while also overseeing research activities and strategic planning as the former Director of Research in a leading Geography department.

His specialties include River Basin Science, Geochronology, GIS, Sonar profiling, Remote Fieldwork logistics, Environmental Modeling, Consulting for river restoration, and coordinating interdisciplinary research projects.

Rolf Aalto holds an impressive educational background with a BA in Geology and Applied Math from the University of California, Berkeley, an MS, and PhD in Geological Science from the University of Washington where he also completed additional certifications.

Throughout his career, Rolf has held various research and academic positions at esteemed institutions like the University of Exeter, University of Washington, and UC Berkeley.

He has also been affiliated with organizations like the Stroud Water Research Center and has excelled in securing substantial research funding for complex projects.
