Ricarose Roque
Assistant Professor in Information Science
Ricarose Roque is an assistant professor at CU Boulder, specializing in Information Science with additional roles in Computer Science and Learning Sciences and Human Development at the School of Education. She is the director of the Creative Communities research group and leads the Family Creative Learning project.
As a recipient of the 2023 Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions to Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies, Ricarose Roque's expertise lies in designing and studying equitable learning environments. Her focus is on empowering young individuals to be computational creators, fostering their ability to utilize computing to bring their ideas to life, cultivate their identities as creators, and envision their roles in shaping the world.
Ricarose's research approach includes design-based research and ethnographic methods. She delves into understanding how social contexts can facilitate children's involvement in computing, particularly those from underrepresented groups affected by factors such as race, ethnicity, immigration status, and socioeconomic standing.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.S. in Media Arts and Sciences, as well as a BS and MEng in Computer Science and Engineering, all obtained from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to her current position, she was associated with prominent institutions like the MIT Media Lab and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.
Ricarose Roque has held various roles in esteemed organizations such as the University of Colorado Boulder, MIT Media Lab, Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy, and the Scheller Teacher Education Program at MIT.
