Director of Bands at MTSU
Dr. Reed Thomas is the Director of Bands and a Professor of Music and Conducting at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). His responsibilities include conducting the university's Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and instrumental methods, and overseeing all aspects of MTSU's band program. He is known for his artistic interpretations, innovative programming, and dedication to new music, having commissioned over ten compositions since 2003.12
Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Music with an emphasis in conducting from the University of Minnesota and both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education from the University of Utah. He has studied under renowned conductors such as Craig Kirchhoff and Frederick Fennell.12
Before joining MTSU, Dr. Thomas served as the Director of Instrumental Studies at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Director of Bands at Adams State College in Colorado, and taught at public high schools in Utah. Additionally, he is a retired member of the U.S. Army National Guard, where he served as a conductor and instrumentalist for over 20 years.12
Dr. Thomas is also an active performer, recently playing clarinet and bass clarinet with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. He has guest-conducted ensembles across the United States, Asia, and Europe, including collaborations with notable organizations in South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and China.12
