When I was first starting out as a manufacturer's rep, selling security devices to hardware stores, locksmiths, and bike shops, I started noticing which marketing in the stores was working and what wasn't. - Founded as a Marketing Company ♦♦ Became a Manufacturing Powerhouse through MarketingThe company was founded in 1981 to market a new bicycle accessory called Mr. Tuffy.  We began as virtual company, with no plant, warehouse, or employees.  Within three years the company became vertical with plastics manufacturing, silk screen printing, and packaging all produced in house.  ♦♦ I later wrote and article for Inc. Magazine, "Virtual to Vertical."Our primary product, Mr. Tuffy, dominated the bicycle retail business with over 95% saturation of retailers and 95% market share.  We expanded our production from extrusion into blow molding and injection molding and introduced various bicycle water bottles that almost immediately became the second best selling water bottle in bike shops.  Only Specialized sold more.AC International Eventually reached $5.5m in sales on 5 continents.  Clients included Target, KMart, Walmart, Sears, Ralphs, CVS, US Army, Navy, Marines, and wholesalers in several industries.In 1987 we created a specialty products division to sell bicycle style water bottles.  By distinguishing our product line as having the best quality on the market and having sophisticated printing capability, including printing up to 11 spot colors with precision registration, we ended up manufacturing bottles for virtually every company in the Fortune 500, including Disney, B of A, Apple, and more.Company was sold in 2007.  Before Social Media Marketing there was plenty of other marketing to choose from:  We utilized trade shows, print, mailing, websites, blogs, packaging, innovation, and one-on-one selling to achieve our rapid growth.My primary responsibilities were to run day-to-day operations, source funding, design and create new products, find resources for manufacturing and packaging.  I was also primarily responsible for determining distribution channels and hiring sales professionals and associates to reach those markets that we targeted.
