Phillip A. Washington is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Denver International Airport (DEN). He was initially nominated for this position by former Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in July 2021 and was confirmed by the Denver City Council. He was re-nominated by current Mayor Mike Johnston in July 2023 and confirmed again.1 Under his leadership, DEN has become the world's third busiest airport by passengers in 2022, with a significant economic impact on the region.1
Washington oversees a $10 billion Capital Improvement Program at DEN, which includes plans for accommodating 100 million passengers by 2030, a 30% increase from current levels. His tenure has seen numerous developments such as the opening of new gates, relocation of airline ticket counters, and efforts to reduce the airport's carbon footprint.1
Before his role at DEN, Washington served as the CEO of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) from March 2015 to May 2021. There, he managed a balanced budget of $8.5 billion and oversaw significant capital projects.1 Washington also played a pivotal role in passing Measure M in Los Angeles County, which has funded numerous transportation projects.1
In recognition of his contributions to public transportation, Washington was inducted into the American Public Transportation Association Hall of Fame in August 2023.2
