Philip Asare
Philip Asare is an Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Toronto, specifically within the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP). He joined the university in July 2020 and has a cross-appointment in the Division of Engineering Science. His teaching focuses on engineering design and the development of transdisciplinary competencies, emphasizing engineering as a human-centered activity that tells rich stories about how innovations come to life.1
Asare's educational philosophy centers on preparing engineers to navigate complex socio-technical environments. He advocates for creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable engineering community, highlighting the societal benefits that arise from such diversity. In recognition of his commitment to inclusivity, he was appointed as the Dean’s Advisor on Black Inclusivity at U of T Engineering in February 2023.1
Before his tenure at the University of Toronto, Asare served as an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Bucknell University. He also gained experience as a Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration while completing his PhD in Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia.1
