    Peter Bauer

    Deputy Director Research Department at European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts

    Peter Bauer is currently serving as the Deputy Director of Research and Programme Manager of the ECMWF Scalability Programme at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

    In his role, Peter leads a team of approximately 100 staff within the Research Department and plays a key role in defining the research strategy and representing research aspects at ECMWF.

    He is the founder and leader of the ECMWF Scalability Programme, which addresses challenges in operating complex Earth system models on future supercomputing facilities and handling large volumes of observational and model output data.

    Peter Bauer has extensive experience in coordinating scientific and technical activities related to satellite observations, including ESA and EUMETSAT project management, and representation in mission teams at CNES, NOAA, and NASA.

    As the former Head of the Model Division at ECMWF, Peter oversaw scientific developments in forecasting models, leading to substantial improvements in forecast accuracy compared to other international centers.

    Peter Bauer holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology from the University of Hamburg and a Diplom (Masters) in the same field from the University of Cologne.

    His past experiences include roles such as Visiting Research Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, UCAR fellow at NOAA, and Group Manager of Atmospheric Remote Sensing at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

    He has also been nominated for advisory boards supporting mission design and strategic decision-making at space agencies, including the ESA EGPM Mission Advisory Team, EUMETSAT EPS-SG Mission Experts Team, ESA Science Advisory Committee, and WMO WWRP Scientific Steering Committee.
