Mike DeFlorio

Mike DeFlorio is a dedicated researcher focusing on weather extremes in a changing climate and their impact on various sectors like agriculture, energy, and human health.

Currently, he conducts research at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, specifically studying atmospheric rivers' predictability limits and prediction skill.

His work involves analyzing operational weather model data to understand how atmospheric rivers influence heavy rain and snowfall in regions like the western U.S. and the U.K., which are highly susceptible to extreme weather events.

Mike DeFlorio holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Oceanography/Climate Science from the University of California, San Diego, and a Bachelor of Science (B.S., cum laude) in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology from Cornell University.

He has gained extensive research experience, having worked in various roles including Research Analyst, Project Scientist, and Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, as well as holding positions at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of California, San Diego.
