    Paul O'Kane is a Scottish Labour and Co-operative politician who has been serving as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the West Scotland region since May 6, 2021. Born on March 21, 1988, in Paisley and raised in Neilston, he attended St Luke's High School in Barrhead, where he was Head Boy. O'Kane then pursued higher education at the University of Glasgow, earning an MA (Hons) in English Literature and Politics, during which he chaired the University Labour Club.12

    Early Career

    After graduating in 2010, O'Kane began his career in the third sector, working as a Development Officer with Volunteer Centre East Dunbartonshire and later for the Beardmore Trust. He spent seven years with ENABLE Scotland, a charity focused on learning disabilities, where he held the position of Policy and Participation Manager before entering politics.13

    Political Career

    O'Kane's political journey began in local government when he was elected to East Renfrewshire Council in 2012, representing Neilston, Uplawmoor, and Newton Mearns North. He served as Deputy Education Convener and later became Deputy Leader of the Council and Scottish Labour group leader. He stepped down from council duties after the 2022 elections.14

    In the Scottish Parliament, O'Kane has held significant roles including Deputy Convenor of the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee and Shadow Minister for Public Health, Social Care, and Drugs Policy. In April 2023, he was appointed Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice and Social Security.234

    Personal Life

    O'Kane is notable for being the first openly gay man elected to the Scottish Parliament for Scottish Labour. He married his husband in August 2021. Outside of politics, he enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.12

    Current Focus

    As Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice and Social Security, O'Kane is involved in various initiatives aimed at addressing social inequalities and improving public health services within Scotland.3
