Weaving our own intensely personal and authentic stories into a broader framework of reliable, true and consistent "Patient Voice Principles".

Helped lead a multi-stakeholder group including physicians, nurses, consumer advocacy organizations and others to create a first-of-its-kind "Patient Preferences Passport", documenting a patient's unique history and preferences so they can act as a "constant" through care transitions. Designed not to replace the medical record, but as an overture to authentic communication and partnership with clinicians while owned by the patient. A version of the Passport is available in an app form at Doctella.com, and tools to create a branded version, online or in hard copy, are free. Many of my public presentations continue to incorporate the Patient Passport, which is being extremely well-received with patients as well as in the provider/payer community.

In August 2014, the Patient Pod, a device to bring autonomy and comfort to a bedridden patient , was awarded US Patent number No. 8,807,376. I created this device in the wake of my father's death after a long hospitalization, out of frustration that his hearing aids were misplaced and subsequently ruined, his eyeglasses were often out of reach, and the notes we left for nursing staff to speak up went unseen. 100% of patients and nurses at 7 hospitals in 5 states reported they would recommend a Patient Pod to family and friends. It enhances 10 metrics of patient safety and participation. (See linked video.) There is a quantity of these devices available for donation to a good cause.
