Mitzi Cardenas is a healthcare executive with over 30 years of experience in the industry.4 She is currently the Executive Chief Administrative Officer for University Health.34 In this role, she oversees corporate administrative operations and services, including construction and real estate, strategy and planning, information systems and technology, compliance, public safety, community relations, supply chain, and business growth and development.4
Cardenas was hired as the chief information officer (CIO) for Truman Medical Centers (TMC) in Kansas City, Missouri.2 She started in this role in 2008.34 In addition to her CIO responsibilities, Cardenas took on the roles of senior vice president of strategy, business development, and technology at Truman Medical Centers about three years before October 2014.1 Before joining University Health, Cardenas held leadership and consulting roles in a pediatric academic medical center, the military health system, and a multi-hospital healthcare delivery system.4
Since joining University Health, Cardenas has spearheaded efforts to position the organization as a leader in technology and innovation to improve patient care quality and safety.34 As a result, University Health has been recognized multiple times as a "HealthCare's Most Wired" organization and has received the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 designation.34 University Health has also been named a HIMSS Davies Award winner twice for its exceptional use of technology to improve the quality of care.4
Cardenas has also been recognized by Ingram's magazine as a "Hero in Healthcare".34 She was also named one of the Most Powerful Women in Health IT by Health Data Management for two years in a row, and in 2019, the Kansas City Business Journal named her one of 25 female business leaders in "Women Who Mean Business".3 In September 2022, Ingram's Kansas City's Business Magazine recognized her as one of "Ingram's 250 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Kansas City".4
Mitzi Cardenas earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Science from Troy State University.3 She has served as chair of the American Hospital Association’s Interoperability Advisory Group and the Missouri Hospital Association’s HIT Committee.34 Additionally, Cardenas was a board and executive committee member for the Lewis and Clark Health Information Exchange and served on several national advisory and vendor committees.4 She is currently a member of the board of trustees for Park University and on the executive committee and board of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.34
