Murthy Lab: Enabling closed-loop control of neural activity in acoustically communicating fruit flies.
Neurons are most meaningfully studied when they are observed or perturbed at behavioral contexts of interest. To investigate roles of neurons during acoustic communication that occurs in fruit fly courtship, developed an experimental framework that detects courtship song motifs with ∼10-ms latency and opto- gentically controls activity of genetically labeled neurons in a closed-loop fashion. Implemented the song classifier with convolutional neural networks. Worked closely with low-level code to minimize latency. Using the framework, investigated roles of dopaminergic neurons in song production.

Laird Lab: Mathematical modeling of DNA methylation machinery
Because machinery for double-stranded DNA methylation varies across cell types, developmental stages, and species, meaningful characterization and comparison of such machineries are challenging. Collected ds DNA methylation patterns from plants and humans, and evaluated their machineries with statistical models such as hidden Markov and that formulated in Choi et al. (2017). Found that stem cells maintain methylation patterns with increasing stringency as they differentiate into specialized cells.
