I built Blend’s data team from 0 to 1, including its data engineering, data analytics and internal data science teams. My team and I achieved the following together. The credit is really theirs. 

Team building:
-  conducted 242 interviews in a year. 
-  hired a team of a dozen people.
-  0 attrition rate in my teams. 
-  established a collaborative and fun team culture, with growth mindset at its core. This results into a highly engaged group of people who care about data and are constantly learning & growing.


Data Engineering: 
-  built, improved and maintained realtime and batch data pipelines to aggregate data of all sorts. Emphasized on data integrity, developer iteration speed, and scalability. 
-  migrated data warehouse from a single Postgres instance to a Redshift cluster.
-  served our bank clients with reports and data APIs.
-  established tools to support our data analysts and scientists. Specifically, Data Scientists Tool Box for model prototyping, the Knowledge Server for Jupyter Notebook publishing and reusability, a Metabase instance to publish and push data to the whole company, and Airflow for job orchestration and data friendliness. 

Data Analytics:
-  got 92% of Blend read our data dashboards, data slack pushes, and email newsletters. 
-  supported about 12 different pods with analytics. Several pods planned their quarters based on my teams result. 
-  enabled the whole company to consume data bottom up with friendly data, clear data documentation, and data office hours. 

Data Science:
-  optimized hiring to hire people who are good with both modeling and programming. 
-  established tools and frameworks to support data scientist’s work. 
-  instrumented a rapid model deployment framework for production model deployment.
-  deployed a few production deep learning models.

Blend

Grab is the leading ride-hailing platform in Southeast Asia. We make transport freedom a reality for 620 million people in Southeast Asia.

I initiated and led data-driven growth at Grab. I also like to get my hands dirty and found my skills in data science, engineering and product management very handy. Later I was responsible for our map products. Equipped with the largest traffic data in Southeast Asia, we chartered local routes and provided predictions of arrival times when you book a car with us.

Transformative projects include: 
-  Complete tracking of how users use our products in both frontend and backend (using Amazon Kinesis)
-  Simplified Registration. Increased sign up rate by as much as 300%.
-  Deeplinking infrastructure for marketing and our business partners.
-  Passenger Referral Program 
-  A/B Testing Framework
-  Passenger Segmentation and Engagement Strategy
-  GrabRoad, our own provider of the time arrival using our own traffic data. Our predictive algorithm used both static batch data and real time traffic data and performed better than Google's API. Saved company M's of dollars in API cost.

In a startup, I need wear many different hats. Some of my activities are: talk to my users and try to understand their problems; design the prototypes; plan strategically of the directions; recruiting top engineering and business talents; train them; guide them to one direction; empower them; architect the engineering systems (right now we are a python house because of the heavy data focus); setting up databases (postgres plus some file systems), code up the backend (Pyramid - very flexible) and tests, and set up the frontend (Google Polymer + AngularJS + Sass); organize events for initial data and users.

Dujour is founded to bring fashion back to everyday people (<a href="http://www.dujour.im">www.dujour.im</a>). Our iOS App, keekaa – your fashion companion (<a href="http://www.keekaa.com">www.keekaa.com</a>), connects people in fashion so that people can have personal and relevant discussions on fashion topics ranging from makeup to how to dress for a specific body-type. We were part of StartX (<a href="http://startx.stanford.edu">startx.stanford.edu</a>). I led my team, designed the products, hold board meetings with CEOs, VCs, and experts in the industry, and pitched to investors.

Skills learned: new venture formation, team formation, product management, Web & iOS UX design, web front-end programming, agile software development, leadership.

Streamlined and optimized PacBio’s Optical Material Testing Program. Because of my work, the efficiency of this program increased by a factor of 10.

Research Scientist Intern

Theoretically modeled and simulated (finite element analysis) how cardiac lesion is created by microwave. This creates a thorough understanding of the physics of the product, which guided and accelerated the key product FLEX10 design.

Skills learned: medical device, modeling and simulation, Matlab programming.

Boston Scientific

DNA Hairpin Folding Dynamics & Mechanisms
-  Designed and implemented a comprehensive study to investigate the DNA hairpin folding dynamics by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. My results resolved several controversies in the literature and provided a comprehensive understanding of DNA hairpin folding mechanisms. 

Single Molecule Fluorescence Tracking + FRET
-  further developed single molecule tracking microscope to allow FRET detection. This technique can revolutionize the way we measure folding dynamics of bio-molecules: we measure the molecules' folding in their native condition.

Skills learned: correlation analysis and statistical inference, programming, analog circuits, modeling and simulation, nucleic acid dye labeling and purification, control and feedback theory and optics.
