Mattia Sormani

Postdoctoral Researcher

Mattia Sormani is a well-rounded physicist with a diverse academic and professional background. He holds a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford, a Master's degree in Theoretical Physics from the Università di Pisa, and a Bachelor's degree in Physics, also from the Università di Pisa, where he graduated cum laude in all his degrees. He has also earned a Diploma di Licenza in Theoretical Physics from Scuola Normale Superiore.

Currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Mattia's research focuses on the dynamics of the interstellar medium in our Galaxy, the Milky Way, with a particular interest in the central regions dominated by the stellar bar. He has also contributed to other areas of astrophysics, such as the study of shocks and high-energy phenomena like blazars, jets and supernovae.

Prior to his academic career, Mattia worked at Bain & Company as an Associate Consultant in the financial services sector. He has also tutored several courses at the University of Oxford, coached the Italian International Physics Olympiads Team, and was a Summer Intern at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Additionally, he served as a Ministro Della Mensa during his time at Scuola Normale Superiore.
