Matthew Hammett, Ed.D.
Executive Director, South Carolina Institute on the Prevention of Sexual Violence on College Campuses
Matthew Hammett, Ed.D., is the Executive Director of the South Carolina Institute on the Prevention of Sexual Violence, based at Lander University. He was appointed to this inaugural position following a national search and will officially begin his role on January 2, 2024. Previously, he served as the Director for Civil Rights and Student Risk Assessment, as well as the Title IX Coordinator at Wofford College.1
In his new role, Hammett is tasked with leading efforts to reduce interpersonal violence on college campuses across South Carolina. This initiative, authorized by Governor Henry McMaster and the state legislature, aims to foster collaboration among public and private higher education institutions to implement best practices in sexual violence prevention, survivor care, and support services. Hammett has expressed his commitment to maximizing the impact of these efforts through education and engagement.12
Hammett holds a Bachelor of Arts from Lander University, a Master of Education from Clemson University, and is currently completing his Ed.D. at Converse University, with plans to defend his dissertation in March 2024. His extensive experience in higher education includes roles such as Assistant Dean of Students and Associate Director of Residence Life, alongside various professional training in Title IX and sexual misconduct investigation.13
