Matthew Burgess
Postdoctoral Scholar at UC Santa Barbara
Matthew Burgess is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in environmental economics.1 He previously held a position as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UC Santa Barbara from July 2014 to July 2018, where he conducted research on sustainable fisheries at the intersection of ecology and economics.1
Burgess completed his Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities from 2009 to 2014.1 His dissertation project focused on developing empirically applicable tools for fisheries management and conservation of threatened species, combining ecological and economic theory.1
At the University of Colorado Boulder, Burgess is affiliated with the Environmental Studies and Economics departments, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, and directs the Center for Social and Environmental Futures.1 He is also passionate about reducing political polarization, especially in relation to environmental issues and college campuses.1
Burgess has received several awards throughout his academic career, including an Honorable Mention in the University of Minnesota's 2015 Best Dissertation Competition and the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the University of Minnesota in 2013.1
