Matt Grech-Smith
Co-founder & co-CEO at Competitive Socialising (the company behind Swingers - the crazy golf club)
Professional Background
Matt Grech-Smith is a visionary entrepreneur and influential leader in the world of social entertainment. He co-founded the Institute of Competitive Socialising in December 2014, which has since revolutionized the way people interact and socialize through unique entertainment experiences. The first venture initiated by the Institute was Swingers, a pop-up crazy golf venue that quickly became a phenomenal success. Drawing in over 90,000 guests within just five months, this innovative concept managed to generate multi-million-pound turnover, setting the stage for future expansions and growth.
In May 2016, the journey continued with the opening of the first permanent location of Swingers, a massive 16,000 square foot entertainment venue located next to The Gherkin in London. This space creatively combines two 9-hole crazy golf courses, three street food vendors, and five creatively stocked cocktail bars, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere for guests to not just play, but enjoy a complete dining and social experience. Such ingenuity did not go unnoticed, as British GQ recognized Swingers in December 2016 as “one of the 60 coolest things in the world right now.”
Driven by passion and creativity, Matt led Swingers to win the prestigious CGA Peach 2020 Award for Best Newcomer in November 2017. The accolades continued in 2018, when Swingers was nominated in the GQ Food and Drink Awards for Best Overall Experience, further solidifying its reputation in the competitive landscape of entertainment.
Seeking to expand the concept further, Matt oversaw the opening of Swingers West End in March 2018, drawing a larger audience with an enchanting 1920s English Riviera theme. This flagship location highlights four bars, four street food vendors, and two additional crazy golf courses, all while offering immersive and hireable spaces for various events.
Display of entrepreneurial prowess reached new heights as Swingers attracted significant investment, beginning with a substantial £28 million investment from Cain International in November 2018 intended for expansion into the United States market. This international endeavor progressed, with an additional $20 million follow-on investment announced in March 2021. These funds were pivotal as Swingers prepared to launch its venues in Dupont Circle, Washington D.C., in June 2021, and subsequently in New York City’s Flatiron District by late 2021.
Education and Achievements
Matt Grech-Smith's educational foundation is as impressive as his business ventures. He studied at the University of Manchester, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with English Literature, achieving a 2:1 classification. This academic background has undoubtedly contributed to his sharp analytical thinking and strategic decision-making capabilities, essential traits for a successful entrepreneur.
His remarkable achievements were recognized when he was listed as one of The Sunday Times Maserati 100 in May 2018, celebrating him alongside other game-changing entrepreneurs who are actively reshaping industry landscapes and driving innovation.
