Marc Salit
Director at Joint Initiative for Metrology in Biology, a NIST-Stanford partnership at the SLAC National Accelerator Lab
Marc Salit is a distinguished scientist and researcher with extensive experience in metrology, biology, and synthetic biology. He served as the Director of the Joint Initiative for Metrology in Biology (JIMB) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from September 2018 to November 2021.6 In this role, he co-founded and led a partnership laboratory between NIST and Stanford University, focusing on developing measurement science for advancing biology as a technology.6
Currently, Salit is a MITRE Fellow, leading the development of MITRE's new Open BioFoundry to advance synthetic biology capabilities.4 He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering and Pathology at Stanford University.1
Salit's career includes:
-
Nearly 28 years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he led the Genome-Scale Measurements Group and the Multiplexed Biomolecular Science Group.25
-
Co-founding and directing the Joint Initiative for Metrology in Biology (JIMB), a partnership between NIST and Stanford University.3
-
Senior Staff Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.5
-
Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2010 to 2012.7
Salit's research focuses on developing measurement science, standards, methods, and tools for biology, particularly in areas such as genomics, synthetic biology, and biometrology.12 His work aims to enable reproducible data, support accurate transactions in biological research, and advance quantitative measurement in previously inaccessible biological phenomena.1
Salit holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Skidmore College and a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from Arizona State University.37
