Highlights
Recently, I read a post on social media where a person was complaining that knowledgeable speakers often share basic talks at conferences. I have heard this complaint a few times, and not only regarding talks.
But... have you ever thought about how much work goes into simplifying a complex concept and making it accessible to everyone?
A talk might be too advanced for some attendees, while it could be too easy for others. As a speaker, you have to find a good balance that delivers what you promised in your abstract and title. However, you cannot control who attends your session. Suddenly, a simple abstract becomes one of the most important tools for providing clarity on what you will cover and ensuring attendee satisfaction.
There is another angle that has been a significant checkpoint throughout my career. Attending a session where I don't discover anything new means I might have reached a solid understanding of that specific topic or my ideas are similar to the speaker ones. It's a fantastic validation that greatly boosts your confidence!
I think it's important to acknowledge that simplifying complex topics and making them accessible to everyone is a rare skill that demonstrates mastery of the subject matter, and believe me it's not easy at all
What do you think?
I look forward to kicking off a great discussion on this topic!
