- Built the first POC recommender system for the company's project management interface;
- Experimented with using a community detection algorithm for resource management and improving the results of the recommender system.

    - Combined basic NLP features into a machine learning model for a marketing campaign;

This is a research post based at Kyoto University in Japan and my main role is to further our knowledge of the origins of the Universe, by mathematically testing various theories of the early Universe against experimental data. My job entails learning necessary skills as and when needed, for example, I am already adept at programming using both the Matlab and C++ languages, however one of my major projects this year required more advanced computing techniques known as parallel programming. Therefore, with some help from a benevolent colleague, I learned the programming techniques necessary to implement what was needed. I have also had to familiarise myself with the latest experimental data and various projects which impact on my own.

Other responsibilities include writing articles for scientific journals, presenting my work at major conferences and in more private seminars, as well as collaborating on projects at a global level. I organise my teams weekly discussions meetings and have set up a blog for us to update after each meeting.

I have been given the chance to travel extensively for my research, including Korea, the UK and Portugal in the past year alone. I am also often asked by my line manager to review scientific papers, asses their quality and decide whether they can be published in the major scientific journal which he edits. This often involves me having to quickly grasp complicated ideas in a short time span, asses the relevance of the work to the wider scientific goals of cosmology, check the consistency and correctness of the paper, ensure that the work is both original and refers to relevant papers in its literature review, and finally compile a recommendation to the editor and a report for the author, balancing honesty with diplomacy.

In many aspects this role was similar to my current one. I travelled extensively, including the USA, Canada, Switzerland and Japan in order to collaborate on projects and present my work at international conferences. I also presented public lectures on cosmology, which meant that I had to explain complicated scientific concepts without resorting to comfortable scientific terminology! I was responsible for organising one of the quarterly meetings of cosmologists in the UK, which involved liaising with the relevant departments in the University to book rooms, organise lunch and also collaborate with my co-organisers to advertise the event and register participants. In these roles I have honed my analytical and mathematical skills, as well as my networking skills. I have learned to collaborate with other professionals at a global and international level.

At the time that I joined, Energy Reports Direct was less than a year old so I established their office administration protocols and built up their database of freelance surveyors. The latter involved phoning all registered energy surveyors and signing them up to our data base; within 3 days I had increased their data base from about 10 surveyors to about 600. I was also responsible for hiring administrative staff, which included advertising, reviewing CVs and interviewing people. Since the company was so new, the official system to analyse the efficiency of energy surveyors had yet to be completed. Therefore, in the interim, I set up excel spreadsheets which evaluated each surveyors efficiency as well as the efficiencies of our companies protocols. This was highly useful when making decisions as to whom to allocate for each new job and to identify areas of improvement within the organisation.
