Kimbal Musk

Kimbal Musk is a South African-born entrepreneur, restaurateur, and philanthropist. He is the co-founder and executive chairman of Big Green, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating healthy places for kids to learn and grow through outdoor learning environments, gardens, and programming.12

Early Life and Education

Musk grew up in South Africa with his brother Elon, sister Tosca, and many cousins. He left South Africa after high school to meet his brother in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and enrolled at Queen's University to pursue a degree in business.1

Business Career

Musk's first venture was a residential painting business with College Pro Painters in 1994. In 1995, he co-founded the software company Zip2 with his brother Elon, which was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999.1

Musk is also the co-founder and executive chairman of Square Roots, an urban farming company growing food in hydroponic, indoor, climate-controlled shipping containers.12 He currently sits on the boards of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, where his brother Elon is the CEO.12

The Kitchen Restaurant Group

In 2004, Musk co-founded The Kitchen Restaurant Group, a family of restaurants across America focused on sourcing and preparing real food at every price point.2 The group's mission is to pursue an America where everyone has access to real food.2

Big Green

Musk co-founded Big Green in 2011, a national non-profit organization that has built hundreds of outdoor classrooms called Learning Gardens in schoolyards across the United States.12 Big Green invests in communities to grow healthy families and kids through outdoor learning environments, gardens, and programming.2

Personal Life

Musk lives in Boulder, Colorado. He has been married twice, first to Jen Lewin, with whom he established The Kitchen, and later to Christiana Wyly, an environmental activist.1
