He started his career at Arthur Andersen, later merged with Ernst & Young, where he excelled as an audit manager handling a diverse client portfolio. Transitioning to Asia Power Corporation Limited, a listed company in Singapore, he served as the Chief Financial Officer, overseeing financial management, accounting, taxation, and treasury functions. KG Tan's remarkable contributions and leadership in the field led to notable recognitions, including being appointed as a council member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and recognized as one of the '40 Under 40 Most Influential Accountants in Singapore' by the Singapore Business Review.
