Kenya-Jade Pinto is a versatile Indo-Kenyan-Canadian professional with a background in documentary photography, filmmaking, and law.
Her diverse upbringing, from the Kenyan coast to Alberta's foothills, has shaped her unique perspective on themes such as displacement, belonging, and access to justice.
As a human rights lawyer turned documentary photographer, KJ's work showcases a deep focus on non-fiction and narrative projects, evident in her notable works like Not Yet Home and Level Justice.
She has proven her expertise in the field by serving as an Associate Producer on the film Scarborough (2021), and has contributed her legal and research skills to shape impactful storytelling in documentaries.
Additionally, KJ is the producer and co-host of The Ways We Are podcast, delving into personal identity and unity.
Recognized for her talent, KJ was designated an emerging filmmaker fellow by HotDocs in partnership with Netflix in 2020.
Currently, she holds the position of filmmaker-in-residence at York University's Refugee Law Lab, concentrating on documenting the effects of migration technology on individuals in transit.
KJ's educational background includes a Juris Doctor with a specialization in International Law from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a focus on Development and Global Governance in Africa from the University of Calgary.
She is an active member of various professional organizations, including Women Photograph, Diversify Photo, and the Visual Researchers' Society of Canada.
Committed to giving back to the community, KJ volunteers with the Toronto Refugee Sponsorship Support Program, providing guidance on private refugee sponsorship.
