Katherine Storrs
Postdoc researching visual perception in brains and machines
Katherine Storrs is a computational vision scientist and senior lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. While she did work briefly as a Data Scientist at Twitter in London from February 2015 to June 2017, this was not her primary career focus.12
Dr. Storrs has an extensive academic background:
- PhD in Psychological Science from the University of Queensland, Australia (2015)
- Bachelor of Psychological Science with First Class Honours from the University of Queensland (2011)3
Her research interests lie at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. She uses machine learning models to understand how our brains process visual information.1 Specifically, her work focuses on computational visual neuroscience and mid-level vision.2
After her time at Twitter, Dr. Storrs held several research positions:
- Postdoctoral researcher at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit
- Researcher positions in London, Cambridge, and Germany1
In May 2022, Dr. Storrs announced that she would be joining the University of Auckland to grow a research team using machine learning and other computational tools to study perception.5
Dr. Storrs is also passionate about science communication. She has participated in science-themed stand-up comedy events and was a UK national finalist in the international science communication competition FameLab in 2017.3
It's worth noting that while Dr. Storrs has a Twitter account (@katestorrs), she mentions that it's "mostly abandoned" and directs people to find her on BlueSky instead.4
