Kate Orkin

Kate Orkin is an Associate Professor in Economics and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford.12 She is also a Supernumerary Fellow of Merton College.34 Her research focuses on labor, public, behavioral, and development economics, particularly in East and South Africa.25
Research Areas
Dr. Orkin's work primarily investigates:
- Frictions in urban developing country labor markets
- The role of mental health in labor market decisions and outcomes
- The impact of psychological interventions on future-oriented investment
She conducts large-scale field experiments to test interventions aimed at tackling barriers to employment and improving earnings in low- and middle-income countries.2

Leadership and Initiatives
She leads the Mind and Behaviour Research Group, a joint initiative of the Centre for the Study of African Economies and the Oxford Department of Psychiatry.2 This group focuses on applying psychology to inform the design of poverty reduction and governance improvement programs in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Orkin has also been involved in organizing significant academic events, including the BREAD conference on Behavioural Economics and Development in 2020.2
