Joy Wolfram
Assistant Professor at Mayo Clinic
Joy Wolfram is a Finnish nanoscientist known for her work in nanomedicine, particularly in treating cancer and cardiovascular diseases.1 She was born in Finland in 1989 to Ben and Maria Wolfram.1 Wolfram's interest in science began at age 11 when she saw swab cultures of her dog's infection, leading her to create her own microbiology lab.1
Education and Career::
- She obtained a master's degree in Biology from the University of Helsinki in 2010 and a Ph.D. in Nanotechnology from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2016.1
- Wolfram was an Amgen Scholar and researched a protein that increases cancer cell migration at the Karolinska Institute in 2009.1
- She was a visiting scholar at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, in 2010, where she studied antiangiogenic receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors.1
- From 2017 to 2019, Wolfram worked as an Associate Research Professor at the Wenzhou Institute of Biomaterials and Engineering.1
- She began holding affiliate faculty positions at Houston Methodist's Department of Nanomedicine and the University of North Florida's Department of Biology in 2017.1
- Wolfram was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic starting in 2017, where she directed the Nanomedicine and Extracellular Vesicles Laboratory until January 2022.14
- Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in the School of Chemical Engineering and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.1 She also holds an affiliate faculty position at Houston Methodist Hospital's Department of Nanomedicine.1
Research and Achievements::
- Wolfram's research focuses on nanomedicine to detect, diagnose, and treat diseases, aiming to enhance therapeutic properties and reduce side effects.14
- She has developed strategies for modulating the immune system to improve drug delivery to tumors, using chloroquine and the body's own nanoparticles.1
- She has authored over 100 publications on nanoscale strategies for treating cancer and other life-threatening diseases.1 As of September 2024, her work has been cited over 16,000 times and she has an h-index of 47.1
- Wolfram was named a Finnish Expatriate of the Year in 2021.1 She was also included in Forbes' 30 Under 30 in Healthcare (U.S./Canada) in 2019 and the Amgen Scholars Ten to Watch List.235
Wolfram aims to create nanomedicines with increased therapeutic efficacy and safety for clinical use.4 Her mission involves inspiring and supporting underrepresented minorities in science, with active participation in community outreach and scientific education.24
