    Jon Cates is an accomplished professional in the field of New Media and Art History, currently serving as the Chair of Faculty and an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

    With a rich educational background, Jon obtained a Masters degree in Media Art Histories from Donau-Universität Krems and a BFA in Art from Illinois State University.

    Throughout his career, Jon has held notable positions including Chair of the Faculty Senate, Chair of The Film, Video, New Media, and Animation Department, and Faculty Senator.

    Jon is renowned for his pivotal role in creating and establishing one of the Best New Media Programs, ranked among the top 5 in the Best Fine Arts Schools by US News & World Report.

    As a trailblazer in his field, Jon was the first tenured New Media Faculty hire at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, instrumental in developing the New Media program and Media Art Histories curriculum.

    Apart from his academic endeavors, Jon is actively involved in various organizations, notably serving on the Board of Directors for The Video Game Art Gallery and participating in SIGGRAPH and International Symposium for Electronic Art Review Committees.

    He is affiliated as a Full-time Faculty in the Art History, Theory, and Criticism Department, showcasing a diverse skill set and a passion for the intersection of art and technology.

    Additionally, Jon has a strong presence in the creative industry as an Artist, Filmmaker, and Game Developer at systemsApproach, demonstrating his versatility and expertise across different mediums.
