John has been volunteering for North Shore Rescue since 2001. Each year NSR performs approximately 130 rescues involving lost or injured subjects in the North Shore Mountains and surrounding areas. John's various certifications include Helicopter Long Line Rescue Technician, Trauma Life Support Certification, CAA Level 1 Avalanche Tech/Operator, Swift Water Rescue Technician Certification, Justice Institute Certified Rope Rescue, Certified Organized Avalanche Response Team Member, Heli Underwater Egress Course, CSC Certified ATV Operator, CSC Certified Snowmobile Operator, Wilderness FA, OFA III course, various advanced winter mountain travel and rescue courses, and AED certification.

John co-founded OnRes Systems, a software company specializing in the hospitality market. John helped grow OnRes from zero clients to over one hundred hospitality clients worldwide. In 2006, the majority of shares of the company were sold.

John and Chris Breikss purchased the domain name DiscoverVancouver.com in 2002, and grew the tourism portal from zero visitors to over 1 million unique visitors per month. The company was sold to investors in 2007.
