Joe Pyne

Joe Pyne is a prominent figure in the maritime industry, particularly known for his long-standing leadership at Kirby Corporation. He joined Kirby (then Dixie Carriers) in 1978 and has held numerous executive positions over his 40-year career with the company.12 Pyne served as President and CEO of Kirby from 1995 to 2010, and later as Chairman of the Board and CEO until 2014.1 He then transitioned to Executive Chairman until his retirement from this role in April 2018.13

Under Pyne's leadership, Kirby Corporation grew significantly, evolving from a small marine subsidiary with about 20 boats and 50 barges valued at $35 million in 1984 to the nation's largest domestic tank barge operator with a fleet of approximately 350 boats and 950 barges by 2013.2 The company's market capitalization exceeded $4 billion during his tenure.2

Pyne's educational background includes attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1966 to 1970.4 After his retirement as Executive Chairman, he continued to serve Kirby as non-executive Chairman of the Board.13
