Jo Hook is the co-founder and Managing Director of Temwa, a non-governmental organization (NGO) working in Malawi.12 She founded Temwa in 2003 along with Sophie Guise after running a backpackers' lodge in Usisya, a remote town in Malawi, from 1999 to 2000.1
Background and Inspiration
During their time in Malawi, Jo and Sophie witnessed firsthand the challenging conditions faced by local communities, particularly the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The death of their close friend and colleague, Lotti Nkhwazi, due to AIDS, and its devastating effect on his family, inspired them to take action.1
